In June I posted about how Topsoil Spring had heated up and was thumping. When I checked on it on this last trip, it had dropped quite a few inches and only occasionally sent up a few bubbles. Also, an area of orange just above the vent indicates it’s cooled enough to support an environment for the microbes.
Last week I headed up to the Yellowstone area and ended up spending two days and three nights in the Park. Out of all the changes in the thermal features, one that I found absolutely fascinating was Topsoil Spring. Last fall on 21 Sept 2010, it looked like this:
Now it bubbles cyclically AND (if you’re still) you can hear it thumping. It only takes a pause of a minute or two and you’ll see the water level rise, bubbles increase and ripples come outward from the bubbles, and inward from the edges from the thumps – the steam bubbles collapsing underground by the weight of the water. Others may have seen it like this before, but it’s a first for me.
To reach Topsoil Spring, make your way to Grand Geyser, and then start walking down basin toward Giant and Morning Glory Spring. It’s one of the first small hot springs on your left.
